Workshop by Nicole Beutler from The Netherlands

A short note on the masterclass facilitator

Born in 1969, Nicole Beutler studied German Literature, Fine Art and then Dance and Choreography at Amsterdam’s School for New Dance Development (SNDO). As a choreographer she often collaborates with artists from other disciplines, always searching for new forms of expression at the interface [s1] of theatre, dance and the visual arts. Suffused with subtle humour, Beutler’s work is characterised by the close interrelationship between content and form, and a musical approach to composition.

About NBprojects NBprojects realises projects by choreographer and curator Nicole Beutler, often working in collaboration with other artists and organisations. All NBprojects initiatives are deeply rooted in a desire to create the conditions for meaningful encounter, exchange and reflection within an artistic practice that by definition oversteps the boundaries of established disciplines. Her primary motivation draws on a desire to create space and attention for the 'other', the unknown and the unexpected.

A short note on what the class is about

Together with dancers Marjolein Vogels and Benjamin Kahn, Nicole Beutler will facilitate a workshop based on her working methods and ideas behind the performance 4: STILL LIFE. The participants learn some of the performance material and get an insight into Nicole Beutlers artistic practice, which is inspired by the ancient martial arts form of Kalaripayat, the Bauhaus principles and the Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohens fluid system that focused on the body-mind relationship. The participants should where loose/dance clothing and preferably have some dance/movement experience.

Masterclass by Jacek Luminski from Poland

A short note on the masterclass facilitator

After graduating from the pedagogy department of dance at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Jacek Luminski established the Silesian Dance Theatre in Bytom (Silesia), the premiere contemporary dance company of Poland and an institution dedicated to the development and promotion of dance nationally and internationally. As executive and artistic director of the Silesian Dance Theatre, he designed educational and community outreach programs to promote dance and audience development. Supported by the EU, the Silesian Dance Theatre cooperated with six European dance schools under Luminski’s guidance, developing the country’s first accredited university dance curriculum. Luminski has received numerous awards for his outstanding achievements in developing a unique style, technique and form of dance theatre. He serves as Adjunct Professor of Dance Theatre and the Dean of the Department at the State Drama School in Krakow. For more than a decade now Luminski has been a main figure behind the institutionalized creative support for young and independent choreographers in Poland – an idea seen in the first Choreographic Center soon to be established in Bytom; currently he is working on international dance projects and is pursuing his academic career towards professorship from the State Drama School in Krakow. His main areas of interest include, persistent systems of identity formation, embodied culture, contemporary transformations of citizenship, etc.

A short note on what the class is about

Luminski’s performances are deconstructions of everyday structures based on theories developed by Barba, Grotowski, Savarese and supported by his own research in artistic expressions present in contemporary folk cultures in Poland. Luminski has developed a unique dance technique that has evolved through his twenty years of research on Polish folklore and folk traditions of Polish Jews. His work may reflect, for example a certain sense of space, unique to communities of Podhale that is related to their traditional feeling of freedom and independence drawing the complex rhythms of their music and the power of open-throat singing. By the same token, an analysis of Jewish songs, legends, superstitions, customs, rituals, and dance forms – the importance of the palm of the hand, pelvis, chest, and spine – have also deeply influenced Luminski’s style and technique.
